James Averill is de sheriff van Johnson County, Wyoming. Doordat het erg goed gaat in de regio, trekken er veel nieuwe immigranten naartoe. Deze nieuwe immigranten kunnen nauwelijks profiteren van het economische succes en enkelen van hen stelen vee van schatrijke landeigenaren om zichzelf in leven te kunnen houden. Dit tot grote ergernis van de landeigenaren, die een dodenlijst opstellen met 125 immigranten en er premiejagers op afsturen. Averil is verliefd op Ella, die een bordeel runt, maar hij heeft concurrentie van Nathan D. Champion, een van de premiejagers. Alledrie spelen ze een andere rol in het conflict tussen de grootgrondbezitters en de immigranten, wat de driehoeksverhouding alleen maar complexer maakt.
