Een vreemdeling raakt in noodweer de weg kwijt in onherbergzame Britse moerassen. Per toeval komt hij aan bij Wuthering Heights, het duistere en sombere landhuis van de mysterieuze Heathcliff, een man zo verscheurd door onbeantwoorde liefde, dat hij niet meer wil leven. Terwijl de storm buiten voortraast, raakt de vreemdeling steeds meer geïntrigeerd door het treurige relaas van Heatchliff. Hij koesterde een onschuldige liefde voor de mooie Cathy, een wilde en vrije jongedame die zich niet liet binden door zijn liefde.
