De film vertelt het verhaal van Rafael Padilla die werd geboren in 1860 in Cuba en bekend stond als de clown Chocolat. Hij was de eerste zwarte circusartiest in Frankrijk die een groot succes had aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. De kenmerkende figuur van zijn tijd zorgde ervoor dat hij de lieveling van Montmartre werd, Toulouse Lautrec inspireerde en hij in de eerste films van de gebroeders Lumière verscheen. Tevens was het de eerste kunstenaar die in commercials verscheen. Chocolat stierf in anonimiteit in Bordeaux in 1917. Deze film schetst het vergeten verhaal van een buitengewone man.
