Californië ten tijde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Homer Macauley is een 14-jarige jongen die opgroeit in het kleine stadje Ithaca. Zijn oudere broer Marcus vecht aan het front en de oudere zus Bess studeert. Aan Homer de taak om voor zijn moeder Katie, sinds twee jaar weduwe en zonder inkomen, en zijn jongere broertje Ulysses te zorgen. Om die reden werkt hij 's avonds als bezorger van telegrammen, terwijl hij overdag op school zit. Homer is vastbesloten de snelste telegrambesteller ter wereld te worden maar al snel blijkt hij gevangen tussen droom en werkelijkheid als hij mensen moet informeren over gesneuvelde geliefden en andere ernstige zaken. Hij heeft het hier zwaar mee en ontdekt dat hij in een korte periode steeds volwassener aan het worden is, maar hij blijft optimistisch..
