Op een dag vindt Yagami Light een notitieboek waarop "Death Note" staat. Light vindt al snel uit dat het boekje de kracht heeft om mensen te vermoorden, wiens naam erin staan. Hij besluit om het boek te gebruiken in de naam van het goede. Als er opeens veel vrijgelaten criminelen sterven, gaat de politie achter Light aan.
