"Detachment" vertelt het verhaal van drie weken in het leven van verschillende leraren, administratief personeel en leerlingen aan een middelbare school door de ogen van een interimleraar genaamd Henry Barthes. Henry gaat van school naar school, probeert z’n kennis over te dragen maar blijft nooit lang genoeg om enige binding met de school en z’n leerlingen te krijgen . Het is het perfecte beroep om je in alle openheid te verbergen. Op een dag komt Henry aan op weer een nieuwe school. Een geheime wereld van emoties wordt bij hem opgewekt door drie vrouwen: een jong meisje Meredith, een collega-lerares mevrouw Madison en een straathoertje Erica. Elk van deze vrouwen is, net zoals Henry, in een strijd op leven en dood verwikkeld op zoek naar schoonheid in een schijnbaar gemene en liefdeloze wereld.
